So what is all of the hype about setting goals and it being such an effective tool for achieving success? Here’s the interesting thing that you should recognize – You’ve heard about the setting goal phenomena probably your whole life and you’ve probably heard it from more experts than you could ever remember – Wouldn’t you think that there would have to be at least some truth to the decades worth of claims & such a mass produced message? The fact of the matter is that the claims are true and setting goals can very easily change anyone’s life experience.
Just about every business book you read today contains a piece on setting goals. Most of us, instinctively know that goal setting is a vital ingredient for creating results – Whether it’s a business outcome we’re after or a personal desire for a more athletic physique, setting ourselves up for success means setting a course by way of proper goal setting.
Although we instinctively know that we should be setting goals, most of us naturally avoid this vital process and instead, focus on the fun and less painful planning of our vacations or our Friday night out with the guy/girls soiree. The problem with setting the more important goals is that we usually just don’t do it! Quite simply, we aren’t as conscious about setting worthwhile goals as we are with those things we fear less – Oh, so what is that all about? Things we Fear Less? That’s right! We all have fears & we often do what we can to avoid those fears, at all costs, right? When we fear the dark, we get a night light - When we fear being lonely, we work hard at finding a mate, When we fear being poor, we work hard to build wealth. Here’s the shocking scenario though – What happens when we fear Success? You notice that with all the other fears, we often work at conquering those fears by working with their opposite solutions – So when we fear success, what solution do you suppose we conquer that fear with? Could it be failure? Without Question!
Can you imagine someone actually fearing success, love, wealth, great health & abundance? Well stop imagining, because most likely you too are or have been a victim of fearing these wonderful things. So you’re saying to yourself, I could never fear such wonderful things, right? Here’s the dilemma, although you consciously think that you don’t fear them, your sub-conscious mind most likely does. So what are some reasons why someone might fear success? How about fear of the unknown? Very possibly – When we think about being in a place that we just don’t know, it’s easy to put up our defenses and do things to keep us from getting there. That may be a broader look at why someone may be holding themselves back, but it’s easier to see it when explained this way.
How about preparation? When we are disorganized, not only is it hard for us to focus and set clear intentions for achieving our outcomes, but we are no better than a ship lost at sea and even worse, without fuel.
Your ability to leave your current situation AKA, “Your Comfort Zones”, is perhaps the biggest culprit for holding people back from experiencing their dreams.
Our comfort zones are those places where we reside, so that no one or nothing can hurt us.
Our fears protect us from feeling pain – So is success painful? It can be to someone who has simply become so numb from their pain that it hurts to think about moving outside of it.
So then, how can we escape our mental prison and free ourselves from this fear of the unknown, so that we can once again work on getting to that wonderfully bright future? The first step is by admitting that you in fact have been holding yourself back. The next step is by becoming more thoughtful about being in those much nicer places that certainly may be different from where you presently are, but so much more appealing - Here’s something to drive you forward - You’ll be in a much greater place then you are currently, the very moment you begin your new journey traveling to your brighter destination. You’ve heard the saying, “It’s not only the Destination that’s so wonderful, it’s your journey getting there!”.
The foundational step that you must now take, is the step of learning to become better organized? Being organized is one of the most under-utilized, fear breaking tools for achieving success, in existence!
Couple organization with your ability to set daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals, and you’ve now got a no-holds-barred human potential rocket launcher to your bright future!
